Geographic Quiz: learn Geography with fun

• Overview of our geographic quiz game
  • The geographic quiz consists in a set of world regions and in a set of related questions
  • The player select a region and a set of questions (a game)
  • In the playing screen, the player answers the questions by clicking on the appropriate location on a mute map
  • The questions are shuffled as flashcards, and each wrongly answered question will appear again
  • The game is won once the player has answered correctly all the questions
  • The score increases at each correct answer, but decreases slightly at each wrong answer
• The Game of Countries
  • In the game of countries, the player needs to recognize on a mute map a requested country, whose name is given by the flashcard
  • When a country is correctly identified, it turns white on the game board
• The Game of Flags
  • In the game of flags, the player needs to recognize the flag corresponding to the country, whose name is given by the flashcard
  • When a flag is correctly identified, it disappears from the game board
• The Game of Capitals
  • In the game of capitals, the player needs to recognize the capital city of the country, whose name is given by the flashcard
  • When a capital is correctly identified, it turns green on the game board
• The Game of Megacities
  • In the game of Megacities, the player needs to recognize the city requested by the flashcard on the mute map
  • When a mega-city is correctly identified, it turns green on the game board
  • Mega-cities are agglomerations of urban areas where the contiguous population density exceeds 300 thousand people per square kilometer
  • Each mega-city exceeds 1.5 millions inhabitants
• The Game of Cities
  • In the game of Cities, the player needs to recognize the city requested by the flashcard on the mute map
  • When a city is correctly identified, it turns green on the game board
  • Cities are agglomerations of urban areas where the contiguous population density exceeds 600 thousand people per square kilometer
  • Each city exceeds 500 thousand inhabitants
• The Game of Towns
  • The game of towns is not actually a real game, but an information board
  • Towns are administrative units which exceeds 100 thousand inhabitants
  • When the player clicks on a town, the board will show basic information about that town
• World Regions: definition
  • We divided the world in compact regions of approximately similar size: Europe, West Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, North America, South America, Africa, CIS (Russia) and Oceania
• Briefing about Maps Distorsion
  • It is impossible to map a sphere (the earth) on a plane (the map) in a one-to-one correspondence of points, whilst preserving lengths, surfaces and angles at the same time
  • Each planar representation of the earth results in a map with some distorsion
  • For simplicity, we directly used the latitude as x variable and the longitude as a y variable, that is the Mercatore projection
  • This mapping enlarges the polar regions and shrinks the equatorial regions
  • It has the advantage of being widely used, and so being common to users
  • In our case however, a second distorsion is introduced, by stretching the map to fit the widely different users' screens
